I am always interested in the Montessori style of education for kids, and I always read about how they start out the kids with activities like pouring beans or scooping beans and eventually advance toward using water. But with my daughter only being 18 months, I really worry about her accidentally putting hard beans in her mouth and choke, so I decided to improvise and use Cheerios instead. I just grabbed two bowls that are sort of heavy so it is stable when my daughter will scoop. I then demonstrate to her how I scoop the Cheerios from one bowl to the other, and picking up the spilled Cheerios and putting it back into the bowl. She immediately picked it up and tried to practice scooping, but with only one different, she picks up the spilled Cheerios and eats them instead of putting them back in, good thing it is something safe to eat. The activity didn't engage her for very long, but she would wander around and come back and scoop a little more before wandering off again, maybe when she is older she will have more concentration.
